Donald Lee Hammer

Donald Lee Hammer, 85, of Shirley Indiana passed away on June 26th, 2020 surrounded by his family. Don was born on September 28th, 1934 in La Fontaine, Indiana son of the late Chester A. Hammer and Mildred Marguerite (Newell) Hammer of Shirley, Indiana. Don graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1952. He began his career at Delco Remy in Anderson and then was drafted into the US Army in 1957 stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Fort Knox, KY where he served for two years and remained active for several years. After the Army, Don returned to Delco Remy and worked 38 years in Anderson, IN; where he retired in 1990. Don loved his family, church and community. He was an active historian and supporter of Shirley, IN serving his town and Shirley Christian Church as a 72 year member and served many as an Elder. He was an original member and enthusiast for the Jane Ross Reeves Octagon house. Don’s passions were his family, especially his grandchildren, old model cars and trucks, and Dale Hollow Lake, TN. He spent many enjoyable years vacationing in Byrdstown, TN at Dale Hollow Lake with his family. He had an entrepreneurial and giving spirit and was always seeking a new venture. Don was preceded in death by his mother and father, his son Donald Wayne, grandson Joshua Wayne Johnson, brother Chester Jr., sister in law JoAnn and brother in law Bill Siefert. He is survived by his dear sister Joyce Siefert, beloved wife of 64 years, Rebecca Joanne (Topper) Hammer, daughter Suzie Johnson, grandchild Kerry Zoller (Zac), great grandchildren Parker, Kacy, Lyza and Abrianna, grandchild Cory Johnson (Jane), grandchildren Wilder and Eleanor, grandchild Chris (Becky), great grandchildren Finley, Fallyn and Foster, son Roger Hammer (Cindy), grandchild Ryan (Heather), great grandchildren Evelynn, Warren and Iris, grandchild Brad (Meghan), grandchild Nick (Ashlin) great grandchildren Jace, Lily and Oliver, son Russ (Cheryl), grandchildren Cassandra (Ryan), Kiersten (Curtis), son Ron (Suzanne), grandchildren Wes (Laken) and Andrew. Services: 11 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2020 at Condo and St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, 130 S. Main St., Wilkinson, IN 46186 with Pastor Bill Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson. Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 28, 2020 at the funeral home.
