Chester R. Murdick

Chester R. “Chet” Murdick, 85, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018. He died peacefully in his sleep after several months of illness. Chet is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Hohenstreiter) Murdick of Noblesville; daughter Renee Myers (husband Rex) and grandsons, Zach and Jackson of Charlotte, NC. Preceding him in death are his parents, Robert and Marie Murdick, and brothers Dan Murdick and Clyde Murdick. Chet was born and raised in Muncie, IN and graduated from Muncie Central High School. He began working at age five helping his older brothers with their newspaper routes, eventually getting his own paper route. As a young teen Chet was offered a job at Boxell Signs where his lifelong career in the sign business began. He was employed by Boxell Signs for several years until leaving for the Korean War, serving in the US Army, where he worked as a repairman for military computers, electronics, hydraulics, and radar equipment. He recalled serving in extremely difficult conditions where he lost hearing in his left ear and surviving when many soldiers died. After the Army, Chet returned to Boxell Signs where he worked for many years, becoming General Manager. Chet then opened an electrical sign division for Sign Craft, becoming Vice President and General Manager, and remained with them until his retirement in 2002. A devoted Christian, Chet was a member of High Street Methodist Church in Muncie, Eden Church of Christ in Muncie and Colonial Hills Baptist Church, Indianapolis, where he was a member for over 25 years. During his time in Muncie, he was a member of the Exchange Club. Chet will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, a cherished friend, and a respected businessman who inspired others and left treasured memories. He will be missed by those who knew him. Services will be on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson, IN 46013 with Pastor Robert Taylor officiating. Burial will be held later at the Marion VA Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Colonial Hills Baptist Church, Indianapolis.
