Betty Lackey

Betty J. Lackey, 88, Lapel, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012, at Community Northview Care Center in Anderson following an extended illness. She was born on June 9, 1924, in Spencer County, Indiana to Herman and Iva (Price) Varner. She graduated from Grandview High School in 1942 and received a BS from Indiana State University in 1946. Betty retired in 1972 from Anderson Community Schools where she had taught English since 1964. She began her teaching career at Lapel High School and had also taught in Madison Township Ohio. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel; the Alcott Club in Anderson; the Lapel Lioness Club; and the Lida Teeters Circle. She enjoyed taking painting classes in Fishers. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George Lackey; three children, Janine (husband, Rod) Compton of Frankton, Stephen G. (wife, Pam) Lackey of Anderson, and Brian C. Lackey of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Christopher (wife, Rhonda) Compton of Fort Sill, OK, Bradley (wife, Amanda) Compton of Greenwood, Jennifer Lackey (fiance, Bob Broyles) of Pendleton, and David Lackey (fiance, Melissa Rundquist) of Lapel; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, H. Jay (wife, Kay) Varner of Batesville and Lionel G. (wife, Gloria) Varner of Buford, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Elizabeth Sue Lackey. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastors Dawn Cuthbert and Gary Elston officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, September 17, 2012, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel.
