Asa J. Smith, 97, former Madison County resident, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at his daughters Plantation, Florida residence following a brief illness.
He was born on February 27, 1910, in Anderson, Indiana to Lincoln and Ava (Gilmore) Smith.
He graduated from Anderson High School in 1929.
Asa retired in 1973 as a tool maker at Delco Remy and was a farmer in Madison County most of his life. After retirement he and his wife moved to Mesa, AZ where he lived until 2002. He then shared his time between his two daughters homes.
He was a life-long member of the former Beall's Chapel United Methodist Church and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau
He was an avid horseshoe pitcher and a great pool player
He is survived by two daughters, Patsy (husband, Will) DeLawter of Plantation, FL, and Barbara (husband, Don) Forrer of Lapel; five grandchildren, Dean (wife, Lucrea) DeLawter, Duane (wife, Ruth Ann) DeLawter, Brad (wife, Tammy) Forrer, Bruce Forrer, Bridget (husband, Roy) Parmley; and nine great-grandchildren, Natalia DeLawter, Daniel DeLawter, Jenica Forrer, Jenae Forrer, Baylee Lawther, Brandon Forrer, Bradley Forrer, Brock Forrer, Meggan Cobb, and Cody Cobb.
He was preceded in death by, his parents; his wife, Esther Males Smith; one brother, Richard Smith; and one sister, Bessie Smith.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Burial will follow in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Thursday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel.
